Airfix Diorama

Airfix Diorama

I have been building Airfix models for about 3 years now and have been really enjoying it. I have always wanted to make a diorama, but never knew what to do, or how to make it.
But here is my first attempt, A runway for my Airfix 1/72 scale Spitfire. I have made this from diorama up from scratch, using paper, cardboard,  Humbrol acrylics and various modelling tools and brushes.

I first set up the layout of the runway on A4 paper, sketched on, I did use a straight edge and measured a few of the parts to make it vaguely even =). I then glued the paper onto cardboard (taken from part of a box of an Airfix delivery) with a glue stick, haven't used one of them for a while!
To paint the runway, I used Humbrol acrylics 29, 30, 34, 49 and 106 for painting the runway and the bushes and trees. For the white (34) and yellow (24) I used a mix of Humbrol 49 (Matt Varnish) for the respective paints. I also used a mix of Humbrol Acrylic 29 (dark earth brown) and water, then Humbrol Rust Weathering Wash to create a separation of individual concrete slabs of the runway.
To create the bushes, I ripped of a small piece of kitchen towel (which I use the clean my brushes) then placed on a clamp, then painted in Humbrol acrylic 29, when they had dried I glued them onto the runway.

I then applied the same method for making the trees, except I used old pieces of sprue (for those who don't know it's the plastic holding the parts together when in the box), and glued on other parts, then glued on shavings of plastic to recreate leaves.  I then painted a first layer of Humbrol acrylic 29, then dabbed on Humbrol acrylic 30 for the leaves then glued them next to the bushes.

I hope I haven't bored you to death, but that completes my creation of a runway diorama, I have placed an Airfix 1/72 scale Spitfire on the diorama (not glued) and looks pretty good.

Please feel free to leave comments about my diorama and blog as this is my first in both in relation to scale modelling.

Introduction

Hey there, sitting comfortably? Good, lets begin.

I'm Dan Jones, but my friends call me Garfield, I from the beautiful county of Pembrokeshire, West Wales. I'm currently learning welding in college (and really enjoying it) and in my spare time rather than drinking, taking drugs or other stereotypical activities of someone my age, I build scale models, go out in the woods bushcrafting, play my bass guitar, or Playstation 3.

There's half of me, most likely under the influence of fine, very tasty whiskey or cider =D

This blog is my gateway from me to you about anything with anything and somewhere we can share each others ideas, opinions and general chit-chat. I hope my blog will aid you in your journey through you spare time between the hours that the man takes away from us... i.e. work!
